FOOD AND WINE

The bounty of the Coral Sea, rich volcanic soil and mild tropical climate yield a vast range of produce including fresh seafood, rare tropical fruits and specialty teas and coffee. This drive has a 60km section of road recommended for 4WD vehicles; an alternative sealed road can be used.

Cairns/Port Douglas

These towns and beachside villages like Palm Cove, are popular for their fine dining establishments - many utilising local fresh seafood and produce.

Daintree Coast

Try Daintree tea, local ice cream, tropical fruit farms, local indigenous and native bush foods.

Mount Molloy

Mareeba

This is Australia's coffee capital, visit a plantation, watch how beans are roasted, sip on coffee liqueur.

Yungaburra

Look out for locally grown bamboo shoots and macadamia nuts, bushtucker jam and tropical fruit wine.

Malanda

This region produces excellent farmhouse cheeses and other quality dairy products. The Malanda factory boasts the longest milk run in the world (all the way to Alice Springs).

Charters Towers

Good old Aussie food is on offer here, it's famous for the Aussie meat pies and peas.

Thuringowa area

Feast on exotic tropical ice creams on the highway between Townsville and Ingham. Visit Paluma, a village in the heart of the Wet Tropics, and have a taste from home - steaming freshly baked scones and Devonshire tea.
