WILDLIFE

North Queensland is home to a huge diversity of wildlife and an abundance of species resulting from the four natural bio-regions, including the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics, the Desert Uplands and the Brigalow Belt bio-regions, migratory and endemic species can be found habituating Tropical Austalia.

Wildlife parks

There are over 10 wildlife parks in the area of Cairns, Kuranda and Port Douglas displaying local and native wildlife that are often shy and difficult to see in the rainforest.

Cooktown

Keating's Lagoon's constant water supply, combined with abundant food sources, make it a birdwatchers paradise. Spot crocs in rivers and creeks in this region.

Mareeba & Wetlands

Often best places to look for birds are on the "ecotone" - where eucalypt woodlands and rainforest meet. Mareeba Wetlands is internationally renowned among serious twitchers. Don't be confused by the butterflies - some of them are as big as birds.

Yangaburra

Early mornings and late afternoons are good times to look for Platypus playing in Peterson Creek. Nearby at Lake Eachem and Lake Barrie, early mornings are a good time to look for the Musky rat-kangaroon, a small chocolate brown marsupial, the most primitive kangaroo.

Malanda

Lumholtz tree kangaroos are frequently seen on Tulip Oak Walk at Malanda Falls.

Mt. Hypipamee

When you're exhausted from a day sightseeing and ready for bed, the animal of the rainforest are just waking up. This isolated patch of high-altitude rainforest is the perfect place for night spotlighting rare tree-dwelling marsupials and possums.

Ayr

Cromarty Wetlands is home to a plethora of bird species Magnetic Island is three quarters national park and home to the largest colony of koalas in the wild.

Wallaman Falls (nr Ingham)

View the highest sheer drop waterfall in Australia and spot a cassowary.

Cardwell

Watch dugongs and dolphins play on the way to Hinchinbrook Island, Australia's largest National Park island.

Mission Beach

A popular area to see a Cassowary, the elusive flightless large bird.

Eubenangee Wetlands & Josephine Falls

A wetland with rare species, birds, butterflies, turtles and crocodiles.
