Sydney to Melbourne Coastal Drive

The coastal drive from Sydney to Melbourne is one of Australia’s best kept secrets. As well as showcasing some spectacular coastline the drive also takes you through historic towns, national parks, and past beautiful surf beaches. Along the way the opportunities to spot some of the local wildlife is an added bonus – including koalas, kangaroos, wombats, echidnas and the famous Phillip Island little penguins.

Itinerary:

DAY 1: SYDNEY - JERVIS BAY (220 KM - 3 HOURS DRIVING TIME)

Head south out of Sydney, through the Royal National Park and past stunning coastal scenery as you follow the Grand Pacific Drive towards Jervis Bay. Explore the historic township of Huskisson or opt to take a dolphin cruise.

DAY 2: JERVIS BAY - TILBA TILBA (195 KM - 3 HOURS DRIVING TIME)

Depart Huskisson and continue south towards Narooma, known for its unspoilt beaches, lakes and fishing. Continue to Tilba Tilba, at the foot of Mount Dromedary, a haven for high quality local arts and crafts.

DAY 3: TILBA TILBA - GIPSY POINT (190 KM - 3 HOURS DRIVING TIME)

Follow the Princes Highway, and along the amazing Sapphire Coast, on the way to the state border of New South Wales and Victoria. Stop at the city of Merimbula before crossing the border into Victoria to Gipsy Point.

DAY 4: GIPSY POINT - LAKES ENTRANCE (207 KM - 3 HOURS DRIVING TIME)

From Gipsy Point head south towards Lakes Entrance, a unique area with rivers, lakes and lagoons joining 90 Mile Beach. Take a cruise or a sail around Australia’s largest inland waterway.

DAY 5: LAKES ENTRANCE - WILSONS PROMONTORY (230 KM - 3 HOURS 30 MINS DRIVING TIME)

Leaving Lakes Entrance drive through the Victorian bushland, including Holey Plains State Park. Continue south to reach the extraordinary Wilsons Promontory, with its green forests, stunning mountains, rocky rivers, and long sandy beaches.

DAY 6: WILSONS PROMONTORY - PHILLIP ISLAND (132 KM – 2 HOURS DRIVING TIME)

The drive from Wilsons Promontory to Phillip Island boasts stunning views of Victoria’s southern coast. Stop at Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park at Cape Paterson, where you can discover the fascinating world of the marine environment, before arriving into Phillip Island, home to Australia's famous Little Penguins.

DAY 7: PHILLIP ISLAND - MELBOURNE (140 KM – 2 HOURS DRIVING TIME)

Leave Phillip Island today and take the short journey into the city of Melbourne, where a glorious mix of modern sophistication meets old world charm.
