Improve your health – go on holiday!

Improve your health – go on holiday!

Hayes & Jarvis holidays on prescription? A recent 40-year study reveals holidays are key to a healthy life.

A recent study, presented at the European Society of Cardiology conference in Munch earlier this week, has reported on the importance holidays can have on a person’s general health and life expectancy. The results found that people who took less than three weeks of holiday a year were 37% more likely to die prematurely over the next 30 years.

Professor Timo Strandberg, the study’s lead author from the University of Helsinki, said: ‘Don’t think having an otherwise healthy lifestyle will compensate for working too hard and not taking holidays. Vacations can be a good way to relieve stress.’

Hayes & Jarvis welcomes this report and agrees that whilst holidays can be an incredible opportunity to discover new parts of the world, they should also be considered and valued as part of an individual’s health regime.

Last year, Hayes & Jarvis commissioned a survey into the struggles British people have trying to unwind and destress when taking time off work. The results showed that 32% of Britons admit to feeling stressed on holiday due to work, with a staggering 30% of the population claiming their holidays have previously been ruined by work. The study also found that on average, Britons need two full days to switch off, with 75% of Londoners needing as long as four days to fully unwind.

Hayes & Jarvis’ report not only supports the need to take time off from pressures at home and work, it also suggests that the duration of holiday itself is a vital factor to consider in order to get the most health benefits from a holiday. With the average Briton needing two days to disconnect from work or home pressures, short breaks may not provide sufficient time to fully recharge, mentally and physically.

Following the report, Hayes & Jarvis collaborated with some of Britain’s leading health organisations, including Mind and the British Nutrition Foundation, to create “The Four Pillars of Holiday Relaxation”, a free downloadable PDF that offers 24 tips by leading experts to help travellers unwind and destress when on holiday.

Recently crowned the nation’s favourite spirit by a YouGov poll, Britain’s love of gin doesn’t look set to subside any time soon with a staggering 47m bottles of spirit bought last year according to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA). Although a quintessentially British drink, a gin renaissance is currently taking the world by storm. Travellers looking to plan a gin-inspired holiday can call Hayes & Jarvis’ knowledgeable destination experts on 01293 762456, who are on hand to create unique and tailor-made holidays personalised for each individual.

The rise of American gin

Home of the speakeasies, New York found its love of gin during the Prohibition-era in the 1920s. The city that never sleeps is now home to some of the best gin bars in the world, including the speakeasy inspired Bathtub Gin, found in New York’s vibrant Chelsea neighbourhood, as well as the gin-obsessed tapas bar, CATA.

After exploring New York’s gin culture, Hayes & Jarvis destination experts recommend travelling to New Orleans to discover the birthplace of the Ramos gin fizz. Created by Henry C. Ramos back in 1888, the Ramos gin fizz is infamous across New Orleans and is without a doubt the city’s signature drink. 2018 is a fantastic time to visit the electric city as it celebrates its 300th anniversary. Visit New Orleans in this momentous year and enjoy the rapturous live jazz music that fill the streets with a Ramos gin fizz in hand.

Before heading back to the UK, stock up on New York’s Bootlegger 21 NY Gin, and New Orleans’s Euphrosine Gin #9, to bring a bit of your travels home with you.

Royally inspired honeymoons

Honeymoon like a royal with Hayes & Jarvis

Luxury tailor made specialist, Hayes & Jarvis predicts where HRH Prince Harry and his soon to be bride, Ms Meghan Markle, will honeymoon after the royal wedding of the year this May and outlines how everyone can travel like a royal.

Whilst not all of us can marry into blue blood, honeymooners and travellers alike can visit the destinations chosen by royalty on their own romantic getaway.  Providing a service fit for royals, every traveller booking with Hayes & Jarvis receives a tailor made holiday, curated around the exact wants and needs of the guest.

With the wedding of the year just a couple of weeks away, speculation is rife as to where the royal newlyweds will travel on honeymoon. Luxury tailor made specialist, Hayes & Jarvis (01293 762 456https://www.hayesandjarvis.co.uk) has pulled together a selection of honeymoon retreats that are tipped to be chosen by the golden couple.

Book a holiday to Harry and Meghan’s rumoured honeymoon destination, Namibia, from £2,799pp

Whilst it is not officially confirmed, the press have recently hinted that Harry and Meghan will be travelling to Namibia for their royal honeymoon following the wedding on 19th May. The West African country has been tipped as a bookies favourite since the engagement was announced – and we’re not surprised either. Part of the Commonwealth, Namibia offers fantastic game viewing opportunities, opulent and extremely remote luxury lodges, and glorious all-year-round weather. One of the least crowded destinations in the world, its diverse, wildlife-rich region of deserts, open scrubland and boundless horizons offers a magical environment for any newlyweds starting married life.

Hayes & Jarvis (01293 762 456, https://www.hayesandjarvis.co.uk) is offering a 10 day escorted holiday to Namibia from £2,799 per person. The offer includes one night at the five star Windhoek Country Club Resort, a nine day Highlights of Namibia Tour, and one final night at the five star Windhoek Country Club Resort. The trip will include climbing a dune in Sossusvlei, spotting native wildlife in Etosha National Park, as well as discovering the shallow lagoon at Walvis Bay, a RAMSAR World Heritage Site. The offer also includes return international flights from London Heathrow with Virgin Atlantic and British Airways. Based on departures 15 November 2018. Ring to book.

A royal favourite getaway in the Caribbean, from £7,199pp

Forget the rumours, it is also very likely that Prince Harry will take inspiration from his mum and dad, Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, who enjoyed a highly luxurious and private honeymoon at sea back in 1981.

Providing seclusion, intimacy and idyllic surroundings, the Caribbean is an ideal choice for couples seeking a private honeymoon at sea. With so many magnificent islands to choose from, Hayes & Jarvis can charter a private luxury catamaran or yacht that allows newlyweds to freely sail from one paradise island to the next.  Once guests have explored enough at sea, Hayes & Jarvis recommends ending the trip at one of its breath-taking Caribbean resorts, from the Ladera in St Lucia to the COMO Parrot Cay, Turks and Caicos Islands.

Hayes & Jarvis (01293 762 456, https://www.hayesandjarvis.co.uk) is offering an 11 night St Lucia sail and stay honeymoon from £7,199 per person. The offer includes 6 nights on board the luxurious Moorings St Lucia 4800, on an all-inclusive basis, followed by five nights at the five star Ladera Resort, on a B&B basis. The offer also includes return international flights from London Gatwick with British Airways. Based on departures 21 September 2018. Ring to book.

Recreate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s royal honeymoon in the Seychelles, from £6,149pp

Caressed by gentle trade winds and featuring some of the most perfect crescent beaches in the world, the Seychelles is the ideal destination for those looking for a romantic and indulgent honeymoon. Already favoured by the royals, with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge travelled to the remote North Island on their own honeymoon in 2013.

Snorkel off white sand beaches, relax on a catamaran cruise to hidden bays, or enjoy lazy days cycling through rainforest interiors and chancing upon sleepy Seychellois villages. Featuring luxury resorts and exceptional service, these islands are the perfect destination for anyone looking for a royal reception.

Hayes & Jarvis (01293 762 456, https://www.hayesandjarvis.co.uk) is offering a 10 night honeymoon to the Seychelles from £6,149 per person. The offer includes three nights at the five star Fairmont Bab Al Bahr Hotel, Abu Dhabi, followed by seven nights at the five star Six Senses Zil Pasyon, in the Seychelles, both on a B&B basis. The offer also includes return international flights from London Heathrow with Emirates and Air Seychelles. Based on departures 13 January 2019. Ring to book.

Travel to the Far East on a remote island multi-centre, from £3,599pp

Offering culture, adventure, and outstanding cuisine, Cambodia is also a hot contender for where Harry and Meghan will honeymoon later this month. After exploring the country’s stunning temples and UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Siem Reap, the couple can retreat to the five star Song Saa Private Island Resort, staying in one of its overwater villas for the ultimate privacy.

Both avid supporters of ethical practices and sustainability, the bride and groom will feel relaxed at Song Saa Private Island which is based around strong philanthropic beliefs and social responsibility. Expertly combining luxury and sustainability, the resort offers guests the opportunity to actively take part in local community and conservation projects, as well as promoting spiritual wellbeing through its culture of lifelong learning.

Hayes & Jarvis (01293 762 456, https://www.hayesandjarvis.co.uk) is offering a 10 night honeymoon to Cambodia from £3,599 per person. The offer includes four nights at the five star Raffles Grand Hotel D’angkor, Siem Reap, followed by six nights at the five star Song Saa Private Island, Song Saa, both on a B&B basis. The offer also includes return international flights from London Heathrow with Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways. Based on departures 08 October 2018. Ring to book.

Hayes & Jarvis latest Just a Drop project

Hayes & Jarvis celebrates another successful project granting clean water and sanitation to Kenyan school, in association with Just a Drop

Ahead of World Water Day, 22nd March, Hayes & Jarvis celebrates the success of its latest philanthropy project, providing access to safe drinking water and improving sanitation and hygiene for Kiteta Secondary School, Kenya, in association with Just a Drop.

Hayes & Jarvis has been supporting the international water charity, Just a Drop, for the past nine years and is the water aid charity’s longest standing partner. The latest project has brought safe water to 592 pupils and teachers and improved general health across the school and wider community following the implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) education.

The project was funded and supported by Hayes & Jarvis following a fundraising campaign that saw five members of the company climb Mount Kilimanjaro in 2016. Raising over £10,000, the intrepid team trekked over 5,000metres to the ‘Roof of Africa’, battling freezing temperatures and extreme altitudes.

Lesley Rollo, Managing Director, Hayes & Jarvis, comments, “Hayes & Jarvis is immensely proud to support Just a Drop as its chosen charity. Clean water and safe sanitation is a growing and prevalent problem across the world. The latest project not only provided safe water solutions and sanitation facilities for a Secondary School in Kenya, but evoked exceptional staff engagement through a dedicated year of fundraising from the whole company.  We look forward to continuing our efforts to support the charity and cause that affects so many on a global scale.”

The project funded the construction of a 104M3 storage tank, capable of collecting safe water through the rainy seasons and storing water when the rains do not provide enough. It also saw the installation of three handwashing facilities, education on WASH and the introduction of a Health Club to continue educating current and future students on safe water and sanitation.

Fiona Jeffery OBE, Founder and Chairman, Just a Drop, comments, Just a Drop, comments, “It was an honour to work with Hayes & Jarvis once again on the recent project in Kenya. The school and wider area has already seen a significant improvement in health with increased attendance in lessons as water-related illnesses decrease. We are thrilled with the continued support we receive from Hayes & Jarvis. Alongside the financial donations, their enthusiasm to help promote and support our cause is fantastic and hugely valued.”

Since launching its partnership with Just a Drop, Hayes & Jarvis has donated over £70,000 to the charity and has sponsored eight projects, including Bolivia, Uganda, India and Kenya.

Hayes & Jarvis is proud to announce its ninth project, in association with Just a Drop, which will take place in Chray Village, Cambodia. The current water supply provides an unreliable supply of poor quality water that contains a high presence of E.coli bacteria, high content of manganese and iron and a low PH. Not fit to drink, locals frequently become ill which has a direct impact on education, health and productivity in the area. In addition to the poor water conditions, there is a lack of sanitation facilities at the local primary schools posing a high health risk to pupils and teachers.

Hayes & Jarvis customers can support Just a Drop by adding an optional £1 donation per each Hayes & Jarvis booking.

Stay up to date with Hayes & Jarvis’ fundraising and charity work online at https://www.hayesandjarvis.co.uk/about-us/responsible-tourism/just-a-drop or on social media @HayesAndJarvis.
