Swim, Snorkel and Dive Western Australia

Western Australia is blessed with spectacular marine experiences. The sun shines readily upon unspoilt beaches, and water-based adventure from surfing to snorkelling to swimming with friendly sea creatures is abundant. Dive in. It’s the first thing you see from the air. Western Australia’s formidable coastline 12,000 kilometres of turquoise, white and brilliant red heralds a warm Australian welcome.

The splendour of the Indian Ocean coast is justifiably famous. Generous sunshine, immaculate beaches and gorgeous light are just the beginning. A world class coral reef lies within splashing distance of the shore. Giant, docile whale sharks share their watery territory with swimmers. Phenomenal surf beaches span the coast, along which whales parade their new calves on their annual sojourn to Antarctica. There are secluded crescent beaches to bask on, shipwrecks to dive deep for, and sparkling seascapes to plunge into.

For divers and snorkellers, there’s underwater spectacle from the dive wrecks of the southern waters to the coral-studded Ningaloo reef and the untouched islands between. At Ningaloo, all you need is a swimsuit to get up close to the majestic, spotted whale sharks and the giant manta rays. No-one ever forgets this thrill. Swimming with playful dolphins in their own habitat is equally breathtaking.

Surfers, yachties and kayakers can find paradise anywhere along the vast coastal strip from Broome in the north to Esperance in the south. At Rottnest Island, an easy ferry ride from Perth, you can get wet doing all these things or just get on a bicycle. Undulating cycle paths offer stunning views of the coral-laden turquoise water skirting the relaxed, traffic-free island.

Come days end, stick by the coast for the free nightly sky show. A technicolour sunset over a gleaming ocean is one of many compelling reasons to start your holiday in Western Australia.

Austravel offers a number of marine experiences along Western Australia’s beautiful coastline. Here is a list of our favourites so you can make the most of this stunning environment.

Snorkel with the Whalesharks

To experience a unique marine adventure try snorkelling with the largest fish in the ocean. Whalesharks are gentle giants of the sea and as you cruise the waters of Ningaloo Reef look out for dolphins, turtles, rays and dugongs.

Explore Beautiful Beaches and Secluded Bays

Just 30 minutes by ferry from Perth you’ll find Rottnest Island, a natural haven of white, sandy beaches, bays, reefs and resident Quokkas. Take a swim in the crystal waters and cruise on the Underwater Explorer to see coral and marine-life close up from the comfort of a semi-submersible vessel.

Swim with Wild Dolphins

Join the crew of Rockingham Dolphins for an exhilarating encounter swimming with wild bottlenose dolphins in their natural environment. The team have worked with the dolphins for 16 years and have a trusting relationship allowing them to bring visitors into their world.

Stay on the Edge of the Reef
