I got the ‘travel bug’ at a young age, so much so I studied tourism for three years. I’ve also been lucky enough to have travelled the world and have been to some incredible destinations including the Americas, Far East, Dubai, Australia and the Cook Islands in the South Pacific. I have worked in travel for 12 years, and have been with Austravel over 10 years now. I couldn’t see myself working anywhere else.
Definitely the Cook Islands. There are 15 islands that make up the Cooks, but be sure to explore the main island of Rarotonga and the smaller, less inhabited island of Aitutaki with its breathtaking lagoon. It’s like you have stepped back in time when you visit the Cooks. The islanders are the friendliest people you will ever meet and you feel part of their community as soon as you step off the plane.
Whilst in the Cook Islands I visited Aitutaki and its incredible lagoon. I’m often asked if it’s worth the extra expense to see Aitutaki and the answer is yes! I spent a day on the lagoon visiting the uninhabited islands and sand cays and swam in the clearest waters. It really is the most incredible place I have visited and should be a must on any Cook Islands itinerary.
Exploring different cultures and trying the local delicacies is top priority when I travel. I’ve been brave enough to eat guinea pig in Peru, chicken feet in Hong Kong and crocodile in Australia - it tastes like a combination of fish and chicken! A good balance of adventure and relaxation is my idea of the perfect holiday. Picnics on the beach, exploring rainforests by 4x4 and snorkelling until the sun goes down - heaven!
Tip 1: If you arrive in Australia in the morning, try to fight off the jet lag and make sure you stay awake until the evening to get your body clock in the correct time zone.
Tip 2: If you have a stopover for a couple of days, it’s best to book a city tour in advance so you can get a feel of the place and explore all the areas of interest in the short time you have.
Tip 3: When you are planning a trip, always add an extra night in each place if you’ve never been before. They’ll be lots to explore and this way you’ll have enough time and won’t feel disappointed that you’ve missed something.
