I love travelling, it’s been a big part of my life since I was little. I spent eight years of my childhood in the Middle East and every year we would spend a few weeks somewhere for a holiday in Europe on the way back to the UK. From then on, I’ve been hooked on travel and have been lucky enough to have visited exotic places like Dubai, the Maldives, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Bali, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, the Cook Islands, Canada and the west coast of USA.
I love visiting new places and immersing myself in different cultures. I have worked in long-haul travel for nearly 20 years now and love the fact that no two enquiries are the same; everyone wants different things from their holidays. I also really enjoy creating big round-the-world itineraries for people - the more complicated, the better!
I really loved the Cook Islands as a get away from it all. They are exactly how I imagined the South Pacific to be – pure paradise. The main island, Rarotonga, is surrounded by a fringing reef so you can spend your time snorkelling in the sheltered lagoon. For a real treat, fly to Aitutaki for a few days of uninterrupted holiday bliss.
My most memorable experience was walking on Fox Glacier on on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island. A helicopter takes you up onto the glacier (which in itself is an amazing experience as you ascend more or less vertically). Once on the glacier, the colours and crevices are spectacular. The experience of walking on ice with crampons was also weirdly wonderful, like nothing I’ve ever done before.
I always like to snorkel where possible if I’m visiting the coast. The variety of marine life in different parts of the world never ceases to amaze me. I love walking so my ideal day would be visiting a beautiful national park for a big hike, finished off with a nice meal and glass of wine at the end.
Tip 1: Always pack a toothbrush and change of underwear and clothes in your hand baggage, just in case your suitcase goes astray…
Tip 2: Always have sunscreen with you and apply regularly in tropical countries – even if the weather looks cloudy!
Tip 3: A city walking tour is a good investment if your time is limited as they give you an overview of the different areas within the city and you then know which places you would like to spend more time investigating.
