Things to do in Fiordland
Departing from Te Anau Lake, a boat cruise is an easy and convenient way for deeper exploration of the fiords and famously scenic Milford Sound. Get up-close-and-personal with waterfalls, wildlife and sheer cliffs from the boat, then anchor up and jump in a kayak to explore at your own pace and really get amongst it in the shimmering Milford Sound water.
Fiordland’s diverse beauty continues underwater with the Underwater Observatory at the Milford Discovery Centre in the Piopiotahi Marine Reserve. 10 metres beneath the water, the observatory’s viewing area features large, clear windows offering bright viewings of the marine life in their natural home. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn about the history, geology and wildlife of Milfoud Sound in a unique and fun way.
Take a guided walk or make your own route through the forest and mountains, past the emerald waters of Clinton River, and stroll through ancient beech village. The guided walks offer a wealth of knowledge about the area’s human and natural history. We recommend an overnight walk with a night in private lodges and sleep in complete tranquility.
View isolated scenery which is unaccessible by foot and boat with a scenic heliflight over Fiordland.Take in the bush-covered mountain slopes, alpine lakes, waterfalls, hanging valleys and snow-clad mountain tops from a completely difference perspective. For a truly magical experience, you can even design your own personalised route.
