But, before you pick your ideal stopover, here are a few of the common questions we receive about stopovers:
What is a stopover on a flight?
A stopover is a 'stop' in a city en route to your final destination. Flights to Australia with a stopover usually involve an overnight stay or two. It's a great way to break up the long journey Down Under. Plus it gives you the chance to adjust to the change in time zones and experience another city. Think of it as a mini-break on top of your main holiday.
What's the difference between a stopover and a layover?
As mentioned above, a stopover refers to staying longer than 24 hours in a city, giving you a break from flying. It enables you to leave the airport and explore your stopover city. A layover is a shorter connection period between two places. It can sometimes be as short as 90 minutes or as long as 23 hours, but usually involves waiting around at the airport.
Can I leave the airport on a connecting flight?
If you have a very long layover between two connecting flights, it is possible to leave the airport. You'll need a visa (country dependent) and also have to go through customs and immigration. Your checked luggage is automatically transferred to your next flight, so be sure to have everything you need for your trip in your hand luggage. But most importantly, give yourself enough time to get back to the airport and to go through customs again for your onward flight.
Where can I stop on the way to Australia?
Lots of fascinating places! Largely it will depend on what airline you choose, and where their main airport hub is. For instance, if you fly with Cathay Pacific, you will likely go via Hong Kong. Or if you fly with Emirates, it will be Dubai, and so on. This isn't always the case, but if you have a specific place in mind for a stopover, it's best to let our Travel Designers know, along with any preferred airlines.
