The Great Barrier Reef Drive

Take time to explore Cairns, with the popular esplanade full of restaurants and cafés, and a swimming lagoon perfect for the hot, sunny afternoon.

Drive north up the scenic Captain Cook Highway, perhaps stopping on one of the spectacular beaches en route for a picnic – the road here hugs the jaw-dropping coastline and offers panoramic photo opportunities. In Port Douglas wander through the friendly village or relax on Four Mile Beach.

A day to explore the Great Barrier Reef! Quicksilver depart from the central Marina and their speedy catamarans reach the Outer Barrier Reef in just 90 minutes. The reef platform at Agincourt is a hive of activity, with snorkelling, diving and even heli trips available.

Leave Port Douglas and heading north you’ll pass Mossman Gorge, here Austravel recommends a guided walk with chance to swim in the cool waters. Take the ferry across the Daintree River and head into the rainforest, watching out for Cassowary’s which amble slowly across the road. Take time to explore the boardwalks through the rainforest which lead you to white sand beaches.

Heading south back across the Daintree River, through the seaside hamlet of Wonga, and arrive at Palm Cove, your home for the next two nights.

A day to relax and explore the popular town of Palm Cove. Alternatively why not book a day trip to discover the scenic railway at Kuranda and the Skyrail which travels high above the rainforest canopy.

Return back to Cairns for your onward journey, or why not continue your road trip by heading south towards Brisbane along the Queensland coast.
